Ancient Words For Today - John 8:36
Many have responded to this verse by thinking, “Made free from what? I have never been a slave to anyone or anything!” But Jesus said the truth is that we all are slaves to sin and under the power and dominion of a cruel task master, Satan himself. We also are in bondage to and follow our own fallen sin-prone nature and cannot escape it by our own strength and power. Jesus came to set us free from the power and penalty of sin that brings death and separates us from God. By His death on the cross Jesus paid the price to redeem us from death and reconcile us to God so that we can freely serve Him. Here is what Apostle Paul said about the freedom from sin and the freedom to serve God that we receive when we put our trust in Christ.
There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. Romans 8:1-4
