Ancient Words For Today - 1 John 1:9

When we become Christians, by receiving Jesus Christ as our Savior and Lord, God forgives all of our sins – past, present, and future -
and gives to us His gift of eternal life. We also receive a new nature that desires to please God, keep His commandments, and walk
closely in fellowship with Him. However, believers still have the old sin-prone nature as well. We are instructed to walk according to the
Spirit of God and to deny the fulfillment of those things desired by our old nature. We should pray daily for strength to stand against
and overcome our sinful thoughts, tendencies and temptations. We also should pray that God would strengthen our spirit and our desire
and resolve to walk in His ways and in His love, and fulfill those things that will please Him.

When a Christian commits a sin, whether through ignorance or intentionally, we are instructed to immediately confess our sin to God
and ask for His forgiveness. We are not to try and justify our sin, but rather to acknowledge it as sin and ask for God’s forgiveness,
which He immediately will do. But if we fail to acknowledge our sin and we continue in it, our fellowship with our Heavenly Father is
temporarily broken. The remedy is to acknowledge our sin, come before God and confess our sin, and receive His forgiveness,
cleansing and the restoration of our close fellowship with Him.
