The Lord our God is righteous. This means He is morally perfect and perfectly just in His judgments, without flaws and without sin. And He loves us with a perfect love. God created man in His own image. Adam and Eve lived in total harmony with God and enjoyed uninterrupted fellowship with him. But everything drastically changed when they listened to and believed Satan’s lies. He told them God was holding back something good from them and that the fruit God had forbidden them to eat would not certainly cause their death (as God had warned), but rather would actually make them wise and they would become like God, knowing good and evil. When Adam and Eve disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit, immediately they experienced guilt, shame and separation from God. They realized they were naked, became fearful of God’s judgment, tried to cover themselves with leaves, and hid from God. Their unrighteous behavior fell short of God’s righteous standard. Their relationship and fellowship with God was broken because of their sin. All of their descendants, including us, inherited their sinful nature which separated all mankind from God, and ultimately results in physical death.
But God is merciful and gracious, and does not want anyone to perish or be separated from Him. God’s plan to reconcile sinful man to Himself is rooted For he hath made him (Jesus) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him. 2 Corinthians 5:21
